The week before Christmas
By Mick O Callaghan
Its Christmas decoration time
So exciting for some
A boring necessary chore for more
I come somewhere in between.
Shift that pot here.
Plant the cyclamens there.
Red here, white there
Christmas tree to be located in new pot.
Daisy is dying, shift it out to back patio.
Sack truck produced.
Daisy loaded up.
Parked in Christmas season location.
Searched for small set of trees lights.
None to be found, dumped out last year.
Went out to Springmount,
Purchased a new set.
Placed them on our tree, lit them up.
Looking super, another job done
Christmas cards to be written.
Where’s the list.
Found it hidden in a drawer.
Quickly checked.
We got none from them last year.
What the hell, just send them one anyway
Cards are written, list is doubly checked.
Names ticked off, satisfaction all round,
Quickly stamped and posted.
Present list is now produced.
We discover we are short a few.
So off we trot down Gorey town,
To sort our Xmas presents out.
Yes, that painting will do.
Cushions are looking good too.
Vouchers. Earrings, Battleship game
Music, books,and a hopscotch game
They all just fit our Christmas fare.
Now as our present list is filled,
It’s time for book café coffee and tea.
With a lovely death by chocolate Christmas treat
Richly deserved and ravenously devoured
We’re high on sugar and full of cheer.
It’s time for home and a nightcap beer.
